This friendly American Shorthair cat is one of the most common choices among Americans, all thanks to it’s classic appearance and easy-going personality. No matter what kind of person you are and what pet are you looking for, the American Shorthair cat will probably fit just fine. However, if you still need more assurance, you are definitely in the right place.
History of American Shorthair cat breed
The descendants of American Shorthair cat came to the continent with early European settlers. They were strong, working cats, used to protect ships and farms from mice. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long until their other qualities – such as intelligence and varied look – were noticed.
In early 1990s, they were exhibited as Domestic Shorthairs but due to multiple shorthair breeds coming from Europe, the selected breeding program was introduced, leading to the introduction of American Shorthair cat in 1960s.
How does American Shorthair look like?
Those cats are medium-sized, with males weighing 11-15 pounds and being considerably heavier than females. Thanks to their working background, they are athletic and very proportional. Their coast is short, hard and shiny and they come in a variety of colours and patterns. Whether you prefer a grey classic tabby or a stylish calico van, you are sure to find an American Shorthair that will be just perfect for your taste.
Will this cat go well with your lifestyle?
We can blindly answer yes. American Shorthair cat will certainly adapt to any living arrangements. He will occupy himself if you are a busy person, just as he will be a great company for an aging person or numerous family, with children who expect their cat to be ready to play at all times. American Shorthair will also feel comfortable around your guests or new flatmates. To top all of this, he doesn’t need much special care – you don’t have to bath him at all and he doesn’t have any specific eating or playing habits. American Shorthair is used to looking after himself and he’s smart enough to do that effectively.
Remember that cats of this breed don’t fully mature until they are 3 or 4 years old. You should also have in mind that while Americans are very flexible, they are also fairly typical. If you are searching for any extraordinary traits, you have to look elsewhere. There are several articles present on our website about different breeds you can look into them as well. But if all you wish for is a lovely cat which is both companionable and independent, look no more.
